The new BOLLWERKproduction
A witty, critical satire on what “really is”. An essay of our needs, drifts, instincts and passions, which makes us think and believe that we know what is true and that what we experience is the reality.

In November 2010 four dancers from Mu Terminal Budapest, including artistic leader Adam Fejes and dancer Manon Avermaete from Antwerp (Belgium) will join them. Welcome to the mental home 'Morgen Gestorben'. Here you can enjoy life undisturbed and you get a delicious bowl of soup at least twice a day. Your eccentric neighbours are endowed with a fertile imagination and you make friends for life. Folk dancing and singing lessons help to develop your inner self. We have the means and methods for taking away all your worries and we make it so much fun that you don't even notice your own death.
Choreographer Andrea Boll was inspired by the novel 'The Master and Margarita' by the Russian writer Mikhail Bulgakov (1891-1940). Themes from this multifaceted literary masterpiece are used in a contemporary adaptation for dance and theatre.
In Morgen Gestorben there are several elements from the book: live in a madhouse, the destructive, yet purging, powers of the devil and his gang and the faustian love story of Margarita who uses all possible means to regain her loved one, the master. These three lines, each with a completely different atmosphere, alternate and run through each other.

The novel
'The Master and Margarita', on which Morgen Gestorben is based, takes place in Moscow in the 1930's. This city, where the original street names were changed, where arrests and trials of 'enemies of the people' were daily routine and where all ties with the past, with history and religion, were broken, is visited in the novel by the devil and his henchmen. They leave a trail of confusion and destruction wherever they go. Devilish trickery is used to make important officials and cultural bigwigs look foolish and to oust them from their posts. The master in the novel is a writer, who reminds us of Bulgakov himself. He has retreated to the madhouse of Professor Stravinsky, after his novel about Pontius Pilate is turned down by the literary society. Margarita is his muse and the love of his life, who he does not want to drag down with him. She doesn't take this lying down, enters into a pact with the devil, turns into a witch and manages to win back the master.
The author
On 18 April 1930, the telephone rang in Moscow. Stalin phoned the desperate Russian writer Mikhail Bulgakov (1891-1940), asking the famous author if he might like to leave the country. Bulgakov answered that he, as a Russian writer, could not live outside Russia and the Russian language, and Stalin ended the conversation by saying that the petition which Bulgakov had sent to the Soviet authorities would have a positive result. Bulgakov already had many successful stories, serials, novels and plays to his name when he received the stamp of "ideologically unreliable", in the early twenties. His plays were taken off the repertoire and his work could no longer be published. He could not find work anywhere, even as a reporter or typographer. In desperation, Bulgakov sent a letter to the Sovjet authorities announcing that he had burnt his novel about the devil (the original version). Following the telephone conversation with Stalin, Bulgakov received a position in the Moscow Arts Theatre and some of his plays were put on again. The Master and Margarita was only published long after his death, in the sixties, thanks to the efforts of his third wife, Elena.

An attempt to unravel the mystery of wet hair, soft skins and perfect bottoms
Première date: 11 juli 03
There are hardly any secrets left in this world. For every mystery or secret desire there is a talk show, a magazine, a hidden camera or at least a chat box. One of the last mysteries as yet untouched by science and the media is the curious symbiosis between women and their bathrooms. The secret lies not so much in the often colourless and unattractive room itself, but in the strange transformation undergone by women when they retire to the bathroom. Time passes more slowly, or stops altogether. With every article of clothing they take off, the importance of the intrusive world outside ebbs away. Enticed by warmth, sweet fragrances and soft towels, the soul emerges carefully from its shell.
What happens when women meet one another in this mood? What takes place in hamams and bathhouses? What do they tell each other during the scrubbing of backs, the dousing in cold water and the rubbing away of softened calluses? Women in the Bath shows five women concealed behind curtains and surrounded by sponges, flip-flops, bath towels and the scent of soap and shaving mousse. Their souls sniff each other out. And during their encounters and bodily rituals, the audience takes on the role of voyeur. Five intimate portraits of women, and an attempt to unravel the mystery of wet hair, soft skin and perfect bottoms.

A muse to Temtapsi. It's you!
Temtapsi Island: Seduction, fantasy, competition and boredom in a house just a bit too small for the inhabitants, who flirt with misfortune and make naughty propositions to each other in an atmosphere of choking proximity and unspoken expectations.
TemtapsiIsland is a performance about a very special relationship between two women and a brother, who have one thing in common: their fascination for Kill Bill !

Boxing Pushkin is a danced journey through the live, work and fame of the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837). Together with a tourist guide, a man from the future, a rabbit an orchestra and lots of dancers, the public is boxing itself a path through stacks of poems and stories.
The press about Boxing Pushkin
In the direction of choreographer Andrea Boll it is swirls short text fragments and sprays sweat from the dancers on to the audience who is standing around a real box ring....
... Boxing Pushkin is a swinging theatrical experience that makes you real happy.
(NRC, 15 of May 2007, Ingrid van Frankenhuyzen)
Exciting theatre spectacle drags you through the wayward life and work of the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin.
Yet I couldn’t see all the festival productions but Boxing Pushkin is without doubt the most turbulent of all. Boll creates with an overwhelming maze of characters, texts and actions an image of the historical hero, as we know him now a day. Dancers and actors move, fight and crawl everywhere; singers and musicians push the tempo. It feels like you sit in a wild rollercoaster. As a spectator you want only one thing: to be a part of it.
(De Gelderlander, 15 of May 2007, Martin Hermans)
A fascinating spectacle, that is very rich of splendid images and lurid movement theatre. The mise-en-scène is not only supported by fantastic light design but also by almost unbelievable dynamic movements of the dancers. Terrific!
(Apeldoornse Courant, 16 of May 2007)
Boxing Pushkin calks the festival around the poet: Everybody his own Pushkin, a light-hearted conclusion of an agreeably crazy performance.

Five people are flung into their own little universe, condemned to themselves, each other and their surroundings. Shut up in a dilapidated wooden cage, they drag each other along in their desires, dreams and nightmares.
Driven by music, they build up a place to live. Snatches of happiness and harmony pass by, a nail brings forth esoteric sounds and 'fuckie fuckie, special number' costs three euros. 'Close to you!'

Following the successful collaboration on 'Boxing Pushkin' for the 2007 Pushkin Festival, Andrea Boll and orkest de ereprijs are combining forces once again. LOST&FOUND is a choreographic work by Andrea Boll with 6 dancers and a full orchestra of fourteen musicians, conducted by Wim Boerman.
For this production, choreographer Andrea Boll drew inspiration from the novel Age of Iron (1990) by J.M. Coetzee, Die Dinosaurier und das Gesetz from Gedankenfuge by F. Dürrenmatt, The terror of St. Trininan's (1948), cartoons by Ronald Searle, and the photos Insomnia and Dead Troops by Jeff Wall.
A very normal woman... There is nothing remarkable about her. One day, she finds a homeless man on her doorstep. He is lying there in a cardboard box, wrapped up in plastic. His upper body rolled up; his legs stretched out like a marionette and his mouth open. A washed-up bit of driftwood.
'What are you doing here?' she asks. 'You can't stay here. You have to go'. The man doesn't move and stays lying in his shelter. His eyes wander over her woollen stockings and her blue jacket, and upwards. Shy under his gaze, she tugs her skirt straight.'
In LOST&FOUND, this encounter is acted out over and over again, in different variations: absurd, senseless, violent, tender and humane, but also morally uninhibited and with no shame whatsoever. The audience is thus confronted with continually new twists, different perspectives and changing sympathies. Is the woman charitable or cold and distant? Is the homeless man a profiteer or a victim?
The music by orkest de ereprijs links up with this basic principle. Set musical themes are performed in ever-shifting variations. Discussions are being held at the moment with the composer Hanna Kulenty (born in Poland and living in the Netherlands) about a commission for a composition. It has been agreed that the musicians will not only act as accompanists, but will also be integrated in the production as performers.

Orkest de Ereprijs
Orkest de Ereprijs is the leading orchestra for new music in the east of the Netherlands. The orchestra initiates new projects, at both local and international levels. Orkest de ereprijs is a professional orchestra that is dedicated to being an instrument for contemporary composers. This makes it an ideal partner for collaborations with other disciplines in the performing arts, which has resulted in some multi-faceted productions.
In the past 27 years, orkest de ereprijs has done pioneering work by presenting new music in many different places. Like contemporary art, new music cannot be defined in terms of one particular style. The hallmark of new music is mainly its mentality; its curiosity and courage to experiment.
The orchestra has 14 musicians and an unusual combination of instruments; mainly wind instruments, supplemented by piano, rhythm and bass guitar, and percussion. The artistic director and conductor is Wim Boerman.
